Statkraft donates NOK 500.000 to Red Cross Norway’s relief work in Nepal
Statkraft donates NOK 500.000 to the relief work following the earthquake in Nepal. The funds will be channeled through Red Cross Norway, of which we are a major partner. Since 1995, Statkraft has been conducting hydropower activities in Nepal.
“Our thoughts are with the Nepali people who have been hit hard by this earthquake disaster. Statkraft wants to support the on-going relief work through our cooperation with the Red Cross who is present and operative in Nepal,” says SVP Corporate Communications, Bente E. Engesland.
Statkraft is a major partner of Norwegian Red Cross and aims to strengthen humanitarian work internationally through this partnership agreement. As part of the agreement a "Statkraft Humanitarian Emergency Fund" is established to be used for relieving humanitarian crisis in countries where a disaster is present.
Statkraft has made a decision to use NOK 500.000 from this Emergency Fund in Nepal. In addition to this transfer, Statkraft will evaluate the situation and may contribute with additional funding. The funds will be used for non-food items. This means equipment for shelters (blankets etc), cooking kits, hygiene kits and cans for carrying water etc.
Statkraft has been present in Nepal since 1995, when the construction of the Khimti hydropower plant started. Since 2000, Khimti has provided 15-20 percent of the annual electricity consumption in Nepal.
